The former operator of a Melbourne dental practice has been ordered to backpay tens of thousands of dollars to a one-time 457 visa holder after a second adverse court judgment involving the company’s underpayment of foreign workers.
The Chinese national, sponsored by the No Brace Centre clinic on a 457 skilled worker visa, was paid a flat rate of $15 an hour to work as a dental technician for almost two years.
Following legal action by the Fair Work Ombudsman, the Federal Circuit Court imposed a $5355 penalty and a $32,889 backpayment order against Dr Ari Masters, who operated the clinic in the Melbourne central business district.
