Celebrity chef George Calombaris has copped a hammering in the last fortnight, following the public announcement of the deal his MADE Establishment group of companies reached with the Fair Work Ombudsman to resolve almost $8 million in employee underpayments.
Every step in the sequence of events seemed to reinforce Calombaris’ insensitivity to the poor treatment of the MADE group’s workers.
First came the seemingly soft enforceable undertaking with the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) which includes a $200,000 "contrition payment" and the chef doing a round of industry talks about his wage theft journey.
