Exploring Unheard Voices: Migrant Workers in Home-Based Care

New research from MWC and ISCRR

Migrant workers are essential to Australia’s home-care sector, but their workplace experiences are often overlooked.
This research highlights the physical, psychosocial and systemic risks faced by migrant workers, and the urgent need for change.

Key findings of workplace hazards

Physical:
  • Unsafe home environments
  • Manual handling risks
  • Exposure to pets and unpredictable conditions
Psychosocial risks:
  • Abuse from clients and others
  • Complex care needs
  • High emotional demands

“The client took off their shoes and threw them at me…”

  • Racism and discrimination
  • Language and cultural barriers
  • Fear of losing employment

“Losing a job is not an option… this can mean tolerating unfair treatment.”

With growing demand in the home-care sector, improving worker safety is critical. Without action, risks will increase alongside workforce growth.
