PhD Showcase: New Research on Migrant Workers’ Experiences

Join us for our upcoming PhD Showcase featuring three emerging researchers exploring migration, labour and gender through the lived experiences of migrant workers in Australia and the Pacific region.

This session brings together new research on gig work, temporary migration and wellbeing, offering insights into how migrant workers navigate complex systems across work, study and everyday life.

You’ll hear from:

Thilini Bandara Kumara Bandage
PhD candidate at the University of Western Australia, Thilini explores how international students experience gig work in Australia. She examines how students balance work, study and daily life and how these conditions shape their ability to make choices and navigate the gig economy.

Gemma Tarpey-Brown
Early career researcher and PhD candidate at the Nossal Institute for Global Health, Gemma focuses on women’s experiences of temporary labour migration between Australia, Pacific Island countries and Timor-Leste. Her work examines how precarious labour and migration conditions impact women’s health, wellbeing and family relationships across borders.

Lindy Kanan
PhD candidate at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Lindy’s research interests include gender, migration and development in the Asia-Pacific region. She focuses on women’s safety and sexual and reproductive health in the context of temporary migration to Australia from Timor-Leste and the Pacific.

This webinar is a great opportunity to hear from the next generation of scholars working at the intersection of migration, labour, gender and social justice.
